Music Ministry

Music is vital to the life and ministryof St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church. The rich heritage of traditional Lutheran choral selections is utilized in our worship, alongwith a variety of musical styles. Instrumentalists from within and outside the congregation share their talents often in our worhsip. Voice choirs, for high school ages and for adults, meet on Wednesday evenings during the school year. There is also a handbell choir which meets on Sundays after worship during the school year.

Jolene Webster, an Associate in Ministry, is the Music Director at St. Matthew's and brings a wealth of knowledge, experience and energy to all whom she directs!  She was named a Regional Teacher of the Year in August 2010 for the 2009-10 school year for her work as the choir/music teacher at Paschal High School in Fort Worth.

Susan Fuchs has been the organist at St. Matthew's since 1998.  Her musical versatility on both the organ and piano are a treasure for our music ministry.
She is actively involved in the Lutheran Hymn Festivals presented every other year at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas - the next one is September 19, 2010 at 7:00 pm!

Handbell Choir (Junior High and older) meets most Sundays after the 11:00 am service
      The handbell choir recently debuted a commissioned piece to celebrate its 25th anniversary.  Dr. John Behnke, a professor of music at Concordia University in Mequon, Wisconsin, composed the piece on the theme of hope.  It is based on the hymn "I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say" (Hymn 611 in Evangelical Lutheran Worship).  The composition is dedicated to one of the founding members of the choir, Carolyn Kohn, who passed away in 2007 and whose daughter continues to play in the choir.  The choir to played this piece for the first time on June 6, 2010 as part of an evening of Evensong at St. Matthew's.

I heard the voice of Jesus say, "Come unto me and rest;
lay down, O weary one, lay down your head upon my breast."
I came to Jesus as I was, so weary, warn, and sad;
I found in him a resting place, and he has made me glad.

I heard the voice of Jesus say, "behold, I freely give the living water, thirsty one;
stoop down and drink and live."
I came to Jesus, and I drank of that life-giving stream;
my thirst was quenched, my soul revived, and now I live in him.

I heard the voice of Jesus say, "I am this dark world's light;
look unto me, your morn shall rise, and all your day be bright."
I look to Jesus, and I found in him my star, my sun;
and in that light of life I'll walk till trav'ling days are done.
